Many assume “Burna” comes from his love for Igbo, but that’s far from the truth. As a child, Burna Boy had a fiery moment—literally!
“When I was six, I was playing with a lighter in our kitchen in Port Harcourt and almost set my family’s house on fire! The gas caught flames, and everyone panicked. Luckily, my mum was around and quickly put it out with a fire extinguisher,” he recalled with laughter.
His grandfather found the whole incident unforgettable and started calling him “this Burna Boy” whenever he spoke about him. Over time, the nickname stuck, and today, it has become one of the most recognized stage names in the music industry.
